Its’s that time of the year again–it’s game day! Basketball season is here. Tonight, the Laker Boys Basketball team will open their season against the talented Somerset Briar Jumpers.
Coach Billy Carson is in his second year as the head coach for the Lakers and is super excited about the season tipping off tonight. He says that the Somerset team is a very good team and the game will be a test on how the season is going to go. Coach Carson believes that we have the advantage in size and that it will be a very interesting game.
“We do not look too far into the season, we focus on one day at a time. Win or lose tonight, we will come back to practice and work just as hard tomorrow for the next game. Our team is full of players who have a good work ethic,” stated Coach Carson.
The Somerset Briar Jumpers are coached by former Laker basketball player, Jeron Dunbar. Jeron played for the Lakers from 2002-2006. “It is exciting to be able to come back and coach against my former high school,” said Coach Dunbar. “I’m sure there will be a lot of familiar faces in the stands. I had a lot of good times and memories being a Laker. My senior season, we won the District for the first time since ‘93 and made it to the region. They have not missed a regional tournament since. It’s a good feeling knowing it started with us. It will be a different look from the opposite bench tonight, but I am expecting a good match up and know we will have to battle.”
The first game tonight will be the freshmen boys tipping off at 4:30. The junior varsity team will follow and begin playing at 5:15. The night will end with the varsity team tipping off at approximately 6:30. Come out and support the Lakers in their season opener against the Somerset Briar Jumpers!
