With Christmas approaching, one of our teachers, Mr. Matthew Lunsford, is super-involved in the non-profit organization Operation Christmas Child. A project of Samaritan’s Purse, the main goal focuses on filling up shoeboxes with small items like school supplies, small toys, and various hygiene items to send all around the world to kids in need.
The collection week starts on November 18th and goes until November 25th. Students and others who wish to participate can drop your boxes off at the Fairview Baptist Church in Russell Springs. If you are not close to this location, there are plenty of other drop off locations. Visit the OCC website and search for drop off locations near you.
The items you put into the box depends on the gender and age range you are sending to. The age ranges go from 2 to 14. The Operation Christmas Child website gives good ideas of what to pack in the shoeboxes for the age range you pick. Also, it costs $9 for the handling of these boxes and for a 30-page booklet that is handed out with the boxes. If you are able to bring a filled box but unable to pay the $9, your box will still be gratefully accepted.
To many of these children, this may be the only Christmas gift they receive. While the gifts are great, the main purpose is to show God’s love and share with the children a little bit about Him. This is for a great cause, and much help is certainly needed. If you would like to participate or have any questions, please see Mr. Lunsford in room 141.
