Last week in Laker sports was another busy one for our student athletes. The Bowling team competed in the Regional tournament, the swim team had two meets, the girls basketball team had their second game of the week, and finally the boys team had their second and third games of the week. Here is a recap of what your Lakers have been up to.
On Thursday the Laker Bowling team traveled to to Elizabethtown to compete in the singles event of the KHSAA 2 Region tournament. Our 4 Lady Lakers that competed were Ryleigh Withers finishing with a 435 series, Korrrin Therrien finishing with a 463 series, Brooklynne Carroll finishing with a 473 series, and Makayla Melson with a 539 series after the first three games. Melson made the top 8 cut and went on to bowl a 845 series to finish 7th place. She is the first Lady Laker to make the top 8 in the region tournament.
For our Mighty Laker Boys Bowling Team, Jason Womack finished with a 457 series, Dylan Stringer finished with a 623 series, Nick Blakey had a 666 series after three games and made the top 8 cut, going on to bowl a 1058 series to finish in 5th place. Zack Kean had a 650 series after three games to make the top 8 cut, and then bowled a 1124 series to put him second place for the step ladder finish. Zack took on Kyle Warden of John Hardin High School in the semi-final round and won the round 237 to 189 to advance to the championship game against Zach Dickerson of Thomas Nelson High School. Our own Zack Kean then defeated Dickerson 255 to 198 to be named the 2nd region champion for the 3rd time in four years. Congratulations Zack for a great day of bowling!
As a team, the Boys Bowling team placed 5th overall in the region while the girls team placed 3rd overall for the tournament. Zach Kean will compete in the State Tournament next week on Thursday Feb. 6, and we wish him good luck.
The Laker Swim team traveled to Lindsey Wilson College to swim against Green County and Adair County on Tuesday. The boys got second place and the girls got first place. On Thursday, the Swim Team was back in action against Somerset at home. The boys and girls both placed first in their respective events. They will have a home meet on Tuesday against Pulaski and Southwestern for Senior night.
Last Friday the Lady Laker Basketball team played against South Warren at home. The Lady Lakers won 42-39 in a exciting game to watch. The leading scores were Juliah Bault with 17 points and Star Marcum with a double-double 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Lakers will face Cumberland County tonight for a big district game, and then they will face top 12th region team Casey County on Friday. The Lady Lakers are now 18-3 on the year and 3-1 in district play.
On Friday the Laker Boys Basketball team faced 4th Region team South Warren and lost with a final score of 77-46. During the Third quarter Scott Hamm went down with a injury and he will be out a couple of games due to that. The leading scorers for the game were Briley Hadley with 11 points and Ryan Coffey and Jay Milburn with 9 points each.
Next, the Lakers played at Pulaski County on Saturday. It was a sloppy game as it was dropped by the Lakers with the final score of 79-43. Tonight, the Lakers travel to Cumberland County for a big district game. On Friday, the Lakers will also host Casey County for their second game of the week. The Lakers fall to 8-12 on the year and 1-3 in district play.
