Last week was a very busy one for our student-athletes. The Boys Basketball team had three games, the Girls team had two games, and our Bowling team went to Richmond for the All-Region Shootout.
On Tuesday our Lady Laker Basketball team played the Lady Trojans of Barren County, the 2nd-ranked team in our Region. The Lady Lakers couldn’t get anything going offensively early as they dropped this road game with a final score of 53-35. The leading scorers for the game were Juliah Bault with 10 points and Sophie Shearer with 9 points.
On Friday the Lady Lakers hosted their rivals, the Lady Indians of Adair County. It was a great night for the Lady Lakers as they picked up the win on Senior Night 48-23. With this win, the Lady Lakers improved to 21-6 on the year. The leading scorers were Star Marcum with 20 points and Shiaynn Elkins with 9 points. The Lady Lakers will have 2 games on the slate for this week before the District Tournament.
On Tuesday, the Laker Boys Basketball team also traveled to Barren County and faced the Trojans. It was a tough game for the Lakers as the Trojans are a Top 5 team in the Region. Our Lakers fought hard and played tough, but dropped the game 70-63. The leading scorers were Jay Milburn and Scott Hamm with 17 points each.
Next, the Laker Boys Basketball team hosted the Adair County Indians for the second game of the night Friday on Senior Night. The Lakers came out firing and didn’t look back as they beat Adair County for the first time in three years. The final score was 61-45. The leading scorers for the Lakers were Ryan Coffey with 21 points and Briley Hadley with 14 points. It was fitting that two seniors were the leading scorers for senior night.
The Laker Boys played again on Saturday, hosting the Generals of Jackson County. Last year, the Lakers fell in OT to the Generals but, this year was a totally different story. The Lakers came out hot and defeated the Generals 60-47. The leading scorers for the game were Scott Hamm with 20 points and Briley Hadley with 11 points. With this win, the Lakers improved to 13-14 on the year. On the schedule for this week, the Lakers have two JV/Varsity games for their final games before the District Tournament next week.
On Saturday four members of the Laker Bowling team competed in the All-Region Shootout held at Galaxy Bowl in Richmond. The All-Region Shootout consists of the top 12 boys and girls from each of the 8 regions who come together to enjoy one more competition as the season comes to a close.
In the Girls Singles competition Brooklynne Carroll finished in 10th place. In the Boys Singles Dylan Stringer finished in 7th place and Zack Kean finished in 2nd place, which also placed him on the All-Tournament team. Jason Womack also competed with the team as they entered into the Baker games.
Our 2nd Region Boys Bowling team successfully defended their title, winning 1st place in this tournament for 2 years in a row. Our 2nd Region girls team finished in 4th place.
The Laker Swim team will be in action this week as they have several swimmers participating in the State Meet in Lexington at the University of Kentucky on Friday and Saturday. We would like to wish them the best of luck and we hope they represent Russell County well!
