Tonight the Lady Laker Basketball team fell short to the #1 Bowling Green High Lady Purples 47-29 in the Region 4 Tournament semifinals at Diddle Arena on the campus of WKU.
The Lady Lakers got off to a very slow start, scoring only 7 points in the first half. They trailed Bowling Green by 16 points at halftime 23-7. In the first half, Russell County went only 3 for 18 shooting and were out-rebounded in the half by the Lady Purples 24 to 11.
But the 2nd half showed promises of being another comeback story for the Lady Lakers. They outscored Bowling Green 19-9 in the 3rd quarter and cut the lead to 6 points. But the Lady Purples were able to change the momentum in their direction once again. They went on a 13-1 run late in the game to finish with an 8 point margin of victory.
The Lady Lakers were led by Star Marcum (a junior) with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Juliah Bault (also a junior) had 9 points.
Only two weeks ago the Lady Lakers had defeated Bowling Green in the final regular-season game of the year 43-42 at home after overcoming a 7-point deficit in the final minutes of that game.
It was an outstanding season for the Lady Laker Basketball team under first-year Head Coach Brett Blankenship, who was named 4th Region Coach of the Year this season. The team finished 25-8, and will return 4 starters. It was the final high school basketball game for seniors Shiayann Elkins and Maddie McQueary.
We would like to congratulate Coach Blankenship and the Lady Laker Basketball team for their outstanding season and for making Russell County very proud!
