A Different Look for Homecoming

On Friday, October 23rd the Russell County Mighty Laker Football team hosted Allen Co. for the District Championship. It was not only the last home game of the regular season, but was also deemed our “Homecoming”. During halftime of every other Homecoming game, the nominees, with their escorts, are presented on the field; and after announcing the court the new Homecoming Queen is usually crowned. This year looked a little different.

There were three candidates representing each grade level. Representing the Senior Class were Juliah Bault, Haley Cook, and Katie Owens. Representing the Junior Class were Allye Britten, Baylee Hart, and Ella Robertson. Representing the Sophomore Class were Olivia Hinkle, Grace Jennette, and Jadyn Mann. Lastly, representing the Freshman Class were Emily Hart, Emery-Kate Robertson, and Lily Wills. Since clubs have been unable to meet the this year, these nominees were chosen via a Google Doc. in our virtual classes.

Due to inclement weather, the Homecoming nominees were moved into the middle school gym for their crowning. Their families were invited to join and all were asked to practice social distancing and wear their masks, including the candidates.

The following girls were selected from a student generated virtual voting system. 4th Runner-Up was Katie Owens, 3rd Runner-Up- Baylee Hart, 2nd Runner-Up was Juliah Bault, 1st Runner-Up was Ella Robertson, and the 2020 Homecoming Queen is Olivia Hinkle. Crowning Olivia was our former 2019 Homecoming Queen, Abby Loy. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there were no escorts.

Although the process looked and felt different from our traditional years, we were happy to still be able to have experienced this part of Homecoming, even if it wasn’t the “normal” we are used to.
